2022 Summer Cohort

I am currently working on my degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders, and I have a minor in American Sign Language. After graduating with this degree, I hope to be accepted into graduate school to become a Speech-Language Pathologist. My interests include volunteering, being an advocate for my community, and expanding my knowledge in all things I find fascinating. I find it enjoyable to spend time with my family and friends, go to the beach, meet new people, listen to music, and watch new movies. I cannot wait to do research this summer. I am so eager to start!

Hi! My name is Josiah Brinson, and I am a rising junior majoring in physics and double minoring in engineering and mathematics at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. I am passionate about the application of mathematics and physics to real-world problems, particularly relating to nuclear and materials engineering and the healthcare industry. I enjoy hands-on, experiential learning, and spent the summer of 2021 at my university performing research in the field of nanotechnology. As an undergraduate, I am working to develop a broad set of skills, and then plan to pursue graduate studies in applied physics or engineering. Outside of academics, my hobbies include playing casual and competitive chess, singing (individually and in the choir), cooking, playing tennis, running, or hiking outdoors. I look forward to meeting everyone and researching this summer!

My name is Saad Rafiq, I am currently a sophomore double majoring in Computer Science and Applied Mathematics at Texas State University. During the semester I do research in motion detection using machine learning so I am very excited to tackle this REU project. After I graduate I plan to either get my master’s or go to the industry as a machine learning engineer. My free time mainly consists of playing video games with friends or working out. During the summer I like to go to the river and spend most of the afternoon there and on the weekends.

Erich Ellsworth. He is majoring in Electrical Engineering at Texas State University.

Hello, my name is Noah Bia, I am currently an electrical engineering student at New Mexico State University. I am currently a junior and still deciding if I want to do Microelectronics or signal processing. In my free time, I enjoy working out, playing video games with friends, listening to music, or watching D.I.Y videos on anything.

Hello! I’m Mohammed Hyder from Rhodes College but I often go by Mo to those who know me. My current academic interests are in the field of Computer Science Artificial Intelligence and its use in helping solve institutional social and health problems. My hobbies and general interests include literature, mostly mystery, fantasy, and sci-fi, and writing about them in the forms of short stories that are building up to a novel I am writing. I also do karate and practice magic just as ways to keep my body and mind active with things that are not related to Computer Science, but still require some dexterity, which I don’t naturally have.

Hi everyone, Sam here! I will be starting my senior year this upcoming Fall at UTRGV. I plan to graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Communication Sciences and Disorders along with a minor in American Sign Language Studies. I hope to continue on to graduate school in hopes of becoming a CCC-SLP aka a Speech-Language Pathologist. In my free time, I love reading and hanging out with my dog. I love all things pop culture, interior design, and travel-related. Making memories with friends and family is always a must. And lastly, I love gardening. So excited to be a part of an exciting opportunity this summer, can’t wait to meet everyone!!

Hello! My name is Hayden Cressman and I am currently an electrical engineering student at the University of Texas Permian Basin. I am in my senior year and I am currently taking classes on electric machines, instrumentation systems, power electronics, and electronic circuit analysis. Whenever I am not working on something for school I like to play video games with my friends. Time permitting though I enjoy a good trip to a national park or tinkering on some personal projects. Something I got into recently is painting miniatures for tabletop games. Hopefully, after graduating I can either continue in academia and get my master’s or do work in research.
